An delightful early woodland wildflower is Jeffersonia diphylla, commonly known as Twinleaf. Just emerging, and in some locations, currently blooming, this little plant has pairs of leaves that resemble green butterflies. The showy white flowers are similar to Bloodroot, which is commonly found near twinleaf and blooming at the same time. Jeffersonia tolerates heavy shade if planted beneath deciduous trees where it can bask in early spring sunshine. Flowers become unique, cup-like seed pods with hinged lids, resembling little beer steins. Excellent plant for shade or woodland gardens with humus-rich soils and ample springtime moisture. It is especially happy in limestone soils.
